My off-off-Broadway playwriting debut went up over the weekend at the @Magnet Theater and I am so proud and ecstatic about how it went. “Tondown Castle” is a one act British farce I began writing 12 years ago during a creative writing program in London, and over time it’s transformed and finally became a piece I was ready to produce. This play was my anglophile love letter to British comedy, which shaped so much of my humour. My beautiful and talented cast absolutely smashed it, and I was excited to finally play an old British man. We had a full house who gave us so much energy and laughs to play off of, which I am so grateful for. I’ve been an Anglophile my whole life and have always loved romanticizing England (despite much of their horrific history we should definitely not ignore 😵‍💫). I love Jane Austen novels and the drama of Downton Abbey and have been to many places around England where the stories took place, were filmed, or inspired the creator. I love immersing myself in stately homes, quaint villages, and peaceful gardens that take me back in time. But something else I love about the UK is British comedy. Growing up watching Monty Python, Are You Being Served?, Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, and many more gave me my sense of humor. All this led me to living in Great Britain for multiple years and trying to learn as much as I could about what it means to be a Brit. Obviously I’ll never fully know everything (even if my DNA test results showed that I am 35% English) but I’ve tried to explore my connection with the UK through my writing, and I’m so excited to be putting up my first British farce one act play.
