This is a follow-up to the video that I posted a few days ago showing what happens when I don’t give my Assistance Dog enough space to Work around my mobility aid. This time I thought I would post a comparison so that you can see how things go when I get everything right. it all feels a bit alien to be honest with you because I’m so far away from the object that I want but it gives Pinta space to process what I’m asking, feel more confident that she is not going to get caught under the wheels, room to turn should she need to, and room to approach the item at the right angle. Our trainer has suggested that we start using a laser pen to point to the object that I need. Aura is learning how to tidy things away. This is one of the tricks that we brought home from our trick training class. Aura now has the first step in the bag! She knows exactly what she is doing! This week I had some 1:1 time with Pinta as we left Aura at home whilst we did a post run. Pinta loves going out with me and the scooter. We haven’t been doing this much lately because aura is still so small that I cannot really see her when I’m using my scooter and that worries me. Pinta is such a good girl when we go out for walks, I really hope that I will be able to get aura up to the same standard. She has a different energy than Pinta. Pinta is much more levelheaded and calm, but then she is also five years older than Aura and aura has some maturing to do! Aura also has her own personality traits that will be very beneficial to her training. She approaches everything very enthusiastically and she is very quick when she has learnt something properly. I’m really excited to see how she develops as we continue along our journey. It is still really important that Pinta gets her one on one time with me. A major breakthrough today! Aura has not liked being in her crate since I got her. Today I left her for one hour to go and get my blood test. When I check in after my blood test on the doggy cam, she was howling like a wolf. I assumed she had been been the whole time. But when I got back, I noticed that she had been licking her licki Mat with the peanut butter on it. when I got in, I let her out and said hello to her. Then she went back in and laid down and had her chewy bone that I had left in the crate for her the whole time that I was gone. She is now enjoying time in her crate without any fuss. Don’t you just love the sound of a dog crunching away on their biscuits?! 💜 Sometimes, Pinta will only eat her biscuits if I hand feed them to her! I really don’t mind at all, in fact, I enjoy doing that for her. She does so much for me that it’s the least I can do. Pinta’s food is rather bland because she’s on a hydrolysed dog food. I do top it up with a little venison dog pate. She tends to eat all that and leave the biscuits! The best news I’ve had all year! As many if you know Pinta has been really through it lately with her ears, gastric problems and her feet. Basically, her allergies! The latest of her ailments were some really rather nasty ulcers on her paws. This is where vet Tunde came to the rescue! With just one session of Cryosurgery the redness and soreness on her front paws went away. Today she had just one more session on her back paws which were already almost completely healed! Pinta has been given a clean bill of health and can now return to my side 🥰 I can’t tell you how relieved I feel, I thought this day was never going to come. I’m so proud of this video! Thank you Sara from Sarre's for sharing it with me! Today we had the first training session that we’ve had in a while. Unfortunately, we had to take a break because Aura had a tummy bug. She’s doing so much better now. Today we had our sixth training session with Sarres for our Good Citizen Puppy Scheme Training. Aura learned more about walking next to my wheelchair. We practiced weaving around objects up and down the aisles, to keep Aura focused and concentrating on where my wheelchair was! She did very well! Especially as she hasn’t been out with my wheelchair in about 10 days. We also worked a little on her sit and down when out in public. Her focus at times was a little off, but she responds really well to encouragement and treats. A little update on how Pinta is doing. My poor girl really does deserve a break from being so poorly. On a positive note, we met our new vet today who we are told is permanently in situ at Les Eturs and she was fantastic. Sometimes managing disability alongside an Assistance Dog is challenging. Pinta has been through so much recently and now there is something else. It doesn’t seem fair. Do we rely on our Assistance Dogs too much? What do you do when your Assistance Dog is not well? Do you still feel able to go out? I think one of the things that I struggle with is removing myself from Pinta when she is not quite herself. My view is that I owe it to her to be there and look out for her like she does me all of the rest of the time! I hate seeing my no 1 girl in pain. Off to the vet tomorrow. Yesterday marked walking training session number 7! Aura is doing so well with her general walking now. The struggle is mainly around when we have other people walking towards us.
