The Antandroy people live in the southern region of Madagascar, in Androy, the most arid part of the island. Due to their geographic isolation, they were largely spared from both the Merina invasions and later French colonization. As a result, they were often stereotyped as "savage" or "uncivilized." This is a tribute to our ancestors who fought for our land in 1947. A conflict that broke out due to harsh conditions and unfair treatment during the colonial era. Unfortunately, many fighters were poorly armed, often equipped with spears rather than rifles. The rebellion was also disorganized. The French, along with Senegalese and North African tirailleurs, left a lasting trauma on the Malagasy people through brutal repression, burned villages, sexual violence, civilians thrown from airplanes, and more. As for the casualties, sources estimate that more than 40,000 people died. However, Le Monde reported that the death toll may have been as high as 100,000. Antosy is a traditional music and dance style of the Tsimihety people from northwestern Madagascar, specifically the Sofia Region, and it originated in the 1990s. The genre is very similar to Baoejy, another style from the same region. Antosy is performed by male–female pairs, with movements that reflect different stages of courtship between partners. At nighttime competitions, the performer with the greatest endurance typically wins the admiration of the village’s young women.
