I started playing Little League when I was 8 years old (2nd base). My dad would take me to Jack Murphy stadium for @Padres games and we’d marvel at the San Diego heroes of the time: Steve Garvey, Tito Fuentes, Rollie Fingers and Randy Jones. He became our Little League coach during my first season and eventually was appointed League President of the region, which was the very same year I quit baseball to pursue skateboarding. If he were alive today, he would not believe that the path to throwing a ceremonial first pitch at a Padres game was through skateboarding itself. Last night I had that honor and I know my dad would have been stoically smiling if he were alive to see it, but he might have hated the walkout song and its implications. Unrelated (?): Padres won!

Our “TH & Friends” demo to kicked off the 6th annual Vert Alert event in SLC. I was struggling… with my hip, with the altitude, and finding a rhythm. Woe is me? Nah, but it was a challenge and I was having a hard time keeping it together. That all changed when Andy Macdonald and I decided to try this doubles routine that we created last week, but never actually made all the way through during practice runs. Sometimes you gotta dismiss your own insecurities when someone else is relying on you. And I’m proud that we locked in. Thanks to everyone that skated, attended or watched on #ridechannel, and to #stateofsport for all of the support.

I got hurt a few months ago. It didn't seem like a devastating injury at the time but I learned how significant - and complicated - it was in the weeks that followed. Tore all three glute muscles, including a detached minimus (look it up if you're curious... hard to skate without it) by hanging up on a mini-ramp. So dumb yet so predictable. Surgical repair would have been a long, idle recovery. And for what? To get back to 100? 100% is unattainable at my age, compounded with all the decades of other damage. So I chose a relatively new procedure (MFAT) that promotes re-growth of muscles by transferring fat from your back. No guarantees but worth a try. At this point "there is too much past and not enough future" to waste time chasing a younger self. And it is not lost on me how lucky I am to have access to such medical advances, and that I can afford the treatment. So here is the state of things for those who are interested: I'm exactly 3 weeks out from the procedure, and now skating (and surfing) at a level that is [s]lower than before, but enough to experience that intangible feeling we strive for, as a generation that found salvation through skateboarding. And although I hate to admit it, I took one slam yesterday which gave me validation that I'm still here pushing these [new] boundaries, and eventually made this alley-oop feeble that I was mentally obsessing over during these last few weeks of recovery. I recently had the honor to host @The Whops at my ramp and singalong with them to a classic Ramones / THPS cover. In true punk fashion, we dodged Steve Caballero’s stray deck while not missing a beat. Mind the gap!

This is the kind of “stunt” that sounded fun when Jimmy Wilkins, Andy Mac and I thought of it but became increasingly scary as we tried to figure out the timing, speed and angles. We only made it once, @Atiba Jefferson got the shot, and we never revisited (or talked about) it again.

In my somewhat carefree youth - and even into my early adult years - I didn’t accept or understand the long-term benefits of a healthy lifestyle outside of skating. But I also didn’t understand that I could possibly skate in my 50’s with a wellness routine that includes proper exercise, sleep and @Qunol. What’s the most effective part of your routine?

This was the state of "street "skating competitions in 1991: quarterpipes, wedge ramps and boxes. I did what I could.

I met Ed Helms when he first moved to LA for The Office. He told me that he used to ride bmx - and so did I before I started skating - so I met him at a friend's ramp to compare notes.
