Barclays plans to cut approximately 5,000 jobs by the end of 2026 as the British banking group expands its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. The planned reductions represent around 5% of Barclays’ global workforce, despite the bank reporting higher quarterly profits and announcing a £500 million share buyback. Around 1,000 positions have already been eliminated, with most cuts targeting UK operational and support functions, including software development roles. The announcement comes as Barclays reports stronger equities trading revenue, while rising costs and regulatory concerns remain among the challenges facing the bank. Barclays Targets 5,000 Jobs in AI-Driven Restructuring Barclays described the initiative in its earnings presentation as “organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI.” The programme aims to streamline operations and improve productivity by integrating AI into existing business processes. Approximately 60% of the planned job losses will affect support functions, including technology and software development teams. AI tools can automate routine tasks and assist employees with coding and other operational work, potentially reducing the staffing required for certain activities. Most reductions are expected to affect operational and functional roles in the UK. With around 1,000 positions already eliminated, Barclays plans to complete the remaining cuts by the end of 2026. Barclays Reports £2.3 Billion Quarterly Profit The job-cut announcement coincided with Barclays’ third-quarter financial results. The bank reported approximately £2.3 billion in profit before tax, up around 12% year over year. Profit after tax increased to £1.65 billion from £1.46 billion in the same period a year earlier, representing growth of approximately 13%. Total group income rose 3% to £7.37 billion, supported by stronger performance in its investment banking division. Equities trading was a key contributor, with revenue from the business increasing 47% year-over-year. Chief executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan highlighted the bank’s continuing operational and financial performance, pointing to strong results from the investment bank’s equities business. However, higher profits have not eliminated concerns about costs and performance relative to market expectations. The results show that Barclays is pursuing workforce reductions while remaining profitable, rather than responding solely to immediate financial distress. £500 Million Share Buyback Adds to Shareholder Returns Barclays also announced a £500 million share buyback, through which the bank will repurchase its own shares. Buybacks return capital to shareholders and can increase earnings per share by reducing the number of shares outstanding. The restructuring carries reported costs of approximately £501 million, reflecting expenses associated with implementing organizational changes. Although these costs can weigh on short-term results, lower payroll expenses could reduce operating costs over time if the planned efficiencies materialize. The simultaneous announcement of job cuts and a share buyback has drawn attention to Barclays’ approach to cost management and shareholder returns. However, the available figures do not establish that the buyback is being funded directly by workforce reductions. Barclays CEO Frames AI as an Enhancement to Existing Technology Venkatakrishnan previously described AI as “the icing on the cake, not the cake” in a September interview with Bloomberg, emphasizing its role within the bank’s broader technology infrastructure. #breakingnews #viralmoments #trending #fyp #barclays

The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it. OpenAI’s London staff each received £2,318,181 on average last year, as the ChatGPT-maker poured Premier League football salaries into its bid to dominate the global AI race. Accounts for OpenAI UK Ltd, which is based in Westminster but is opening a new HQ in London’s King’s Cross area, showed that 110 staff shared £87m in salaries and £168m in shares in the company, which is aiming to list on the stock market at a valuation of about $1tn. The earnings amount to 58 times the median UK full-time employee earnings, according to the Office for National Statistics. An OpenAI worker on an average package could expect to take home about £1,000 an hour in salary and equity before tax. But there is understood to be a wide discrepancy between the highest and lowest earners. The biggest compensation packages are reserved for AI researchers who help build the San Francisco company’s cutting-edge models such as Astra. The figures relate to 2025, when there was a talent war and OpenAI’s rival, Meta, was reported to be offering multi-year packages running into several hundred million dollars. OpenAI’s London base reflects the UK capital’s status as an important hub for AI talent with some of the brightest machine-learning experts and AI researchers coming out of universities such as Cambridge. Google DeepMind is also based in King’s Cross. The company declined to comment on the figures, which come after a series of AI safety crises involving its models. This summer AI agents, under training, escaped and hacked into an unrelated company website, Hugging Face, while this month one of its safety leaders quit, saying that its culture was broken and that AI firms were not “being nearly careful enough” about developing the technology. OpenAI’s London office has been established as its largest international research hub but it also houses a government affairs team and sales and marketing functions – responsible for selling licences to companies and organisations. George Osborne, the former Conservative chancellor of the exchequer, joined last December as the company’s head for countries. The earnings were a big jump on the previous year, when the average pay and equity package was £1.1m. Booming AI salaries have already had a significant effect on housing prices in San Francisco, where the average one-bedroom property now rents for $4,400 per month, a figure that is up more than 25% from last year and is nearly three times the US average. Landlords have been trying to capitalise on the boom, particularly in areas closest to the offices of the biggest AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic. In London, OpenAI UK Ltd recorded a more than trebling of its turnover in 2025 to £293m, on which it made a £20.3m profit. #pay #salary #money #openai #chatgpt

US suspends Microsoft, Infosys, Tata, Wipro from green card programme over alleged H-1B abuse The Trump administration has suspended Microsoft from a US programme that allows companies to seek green cards for foreign workers employed in the country on H-1B visas. H-1B visas. Vice President JD Vance and US Labour Department officials announced the action on Thursday, accusing Microsoft and other major technology and outsourcing companies of abusing the H-1B visa system at the expense of American workers. Vance said the government had decided to suspend Microsoft's participation in the PERM programme, which is a key step for employers seeking permanent residency for foreign workers. #us #law #greencard #microsoft #visa

Nvidia is forecasting cumulative revenue to exceed $1 trillion by 2027, driven by strong demand for AI chips. Additionally, for Q1 2027, Nvidia expects revenue to reach approximately $78 billion, which is above analyst expectations. Nvidia's chief executive predicted the company would have about $1 trillion in revenue over the next two years driven primarily by AI chip revenue. Trade Tech Market reported that Jensen Huang made the bold revenue prediction on Monday. Huang cited the adoption of AI tools such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's OpenClaw. "Right now where I stand...I see through 2027 at least $1tn," Huang predicted according to the times. Tuesday morning Huang reiterated his forecast in an interview with CNBC. Huang said that the company had high confidence that its Blackwell and Rubin systems alone will hit $1 trillion in revenue by the end of 2027. "We still have 21 more months of new orders coming in. We still have all of the other things that Nvidia sells. And so, I just wanted to give everybody a baseline," he said. "The ecosystem needs to know directionally where Nvidia is going." "Our growth is accelerating at a larger scale," Huang said. #trending #finance #ai #fyp #nividia

Palantir's Project Maven and how the AI tool helps the military wage war A Pentagon official recently demonstrated how a Palantir tool can be used to support strikes. Cameron Staley, the Pentagon's chief digital and AI officer, praised Palantir's Project Maven. According to multiple reports, the US military has relied on Maven to help carry out its war with Iran. A top Pentagon official provided a rare look inside how the military uses Palantir's Project Maven to carry out strikes. Once you detect something you want to target, "this is what we do," Cameron Stanley, the Department of Defense's chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, said during a presentation at Palantir's AIPCon 9. Palantir posted a video of Stanley's demonstration over the weekend showing how the system could use satellite imagery alongside multiple data feeds, including a flight-tracking system. Using the system, he highlighted how the list of potential targets could be narrowed to a specific car in the parking lot. In another part of the demo, Stanley showed how artificial intelligence is used to identify "what the best asset" is to carry out the strike. For the demonstration, it was a mounted .50-caliber M2 Browning machine gun on a Stryker armored fighting vehicle. "We've gone from identifying the target, to now coming up with a course of action, to now actioning that target all within one system," Stanley said. "This is revolutionary." We were having this done in about eight or nine systems, where humans were literally moving detections left and right in order to get to a desire end state, in this case actually closing a kill chain," he said, pointing to combat footage of a strike. "When we started this, it literally took hours to do what you just saw," he said of the process of going from detection to targeting to decision-making to engagement. "We've been able to reduce that time significantly." Palantir CEO Alex Karp and his deputies are somewhat cagey about exactly what Project Maven entails, given its classified uses. Citing information "in the papers," Karp said that his company has provided the US and its allies an advantage on the battlefield. #fyp #palantir #military #datascience #ai
