🤯 Not what I expected…because I’d never traveled alone before. Yes, I was meeting friends from around the world a week later, and my husband lovingly stayed home helping our daughter through final exams. 🫶🏼 But for seven days in Portugal, I was completely alone. At first, the thought terrified me. Walking through museums alone. Sitting at meals alone. Experiencing beautiful things with no one beside me to whisper, “Look at this.” 😢 But somewhere between the planes, trains, museums, long lines, and winding streets of Lisbon, something shifted. The more I relaxed into myself, opened my heart, and simply talked to people…the more beautiful the world became. 🌊 A couple from Wisconsin gave me wonderful Lisbon tips. A newlywed pair shared their dreams in line for a Basilica. A woman I met at Passport Control invited me to dinner, where we talked for 3½ hours until jet lag defeated us. Two fabulous men from France giggled with me through a Fado show. And the private guide I worried I’d feel “trapped” with in Sintra became someone I now consider a friend. 🥹 What I discovered, perhaps too late, is that when you truly enjoy your own company, the world responds differently. You stop looking alone…because you become open. 🪄 As an over-60 woman, traveling solo felt less like loneliness and more like expanding the edges of my own life. It’s your body’s natural way of adjusting to the next chapter of life. You can also experience weight gain and bloating 🎈 I had a dear friend who was so frustrated because she kept on gaining weight for no reason and her doctors poo’ed poo’ed her ! (Funny how female “ailments” are often dismissed 😢) yet she kept on advocating for herself (sad, right?) and finally discovered she was in…..perimenopause. She got her doctor to measure her hormone levels and discussed with her hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It was a game-changer for my friend !! She lost the weight and now Is working out with weights, eating more protein as she readies her body for the next phase in her life ! Perimenopause is normal, but it doesn’t have to be a mystery. Road ray-ge anyone? 🏎️😂 JK, JK! 👍🏽 Actually, being menopausal has been one of the best times in my life! NO more Auntie Flow visiting each month —OMG— making this the MOST liberating experience. And despite some bumps on the road, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been the best thing for me since the 🎤ERAs tour. If you have any questions about HRT, lmk. ❤️ Im not a doc, but I can share my personal experiences ! You should definitely ask your doctor about this option, especially if you are perimenopausal—so you can catch it early and avoid often debilitating symptoms. 🥴 That said, everybody’s menopause journey is different. It all depends on your individual biology and what suits you and your lifestyle best. Ironically. I don’t think I’ve gotten more angry during menopause as the video suggests. 😂 In fact I’ve gotten more mellow over time which may be a reflection of being older and wiser— which has been an ultimate gift, because you can sit back and really appreciate all the hard work that you’ve put into things and enjoying the fruits 🍉 of your labors. That said, I think maybe the stereotype of the pissed off menopausal woman may be useful… 🧐 Many women experience so much pain and discomfort which translates into being extraordinarily frustrated. I got lucky because I haven’t experienced a lot of that, but also because I got onto HRT very early on. Being frustrated and angry is a bona fide thing— and that’s OK! But I also like the stereotype as well because people better give us ladies wide berth and stay out of our way! 😂 At our age, we certainly deserve that respect! No “Bad Moms” were hurt in the making of this video. 😈 In all seriousness, when you are over 40/50/60 years old , you have a newfound freedom and confidence about yourself which I didn’t have when I was younger. So when you cut loose at our age, it is very intentional— It’s not some random thing that you do, or that someone is expecting you to do, but something that you know will celebrate your choices, your life and your appreciation of your cherished friends. 🍀 For me, as a mom who is sandwiched between a newly minted 16-year-old, elderly parents, and adult stepchildren with new families, sometimes it’s hard to code shift and find myself and my center. Everyone has their own process, and mine has been one of creativity, work and finding more meaning in my life. I know others are on their own journeys, and I certainly admire the ladies in Houston that can get all dressed up and still enjoy themselves …while MY friends would say, how come you’re all dressed up? 😂 But for us, If it means regressing and partying like a rockstar and you better believe there was a ton of planning that went into this spontaneous moment! 😂 So can you relate?
