There’s a reason we can’t look away from sparkle. While honoring the legendary Bob Mackie, I got to talk about something I’m fascinated by: the neuroscience behind our attraction to all things that shimmer. Long before sequins, rhinestones, and red carpets, our brains were learning to pay attention to glimmering light especially the reflections that could signal water, one of the most important resources for survival. Today, sparkle still captures our attention and can engage the brain’s reward and pleasure systems, the same systems involving neurotransmitters like dopamine and the chemistry associated with positive emotion and delight.
