Take a hot can and press it into the front of the bass drum. It melts a perfect circle right through the head, which seems like you just ruined your drum. But without the hole. When the pedal hits, it shoves air forward inside, which gets trapped, bouncing around and making the drum ring out in one long boom. But the hole lets that air blast straight through the front. This makes it sound more like a punch than a boom. Now shove a pillow inside to kill any leftover ringing, and slide a microphone through the hole so when you kick the pedal, the boom is now a thump which lands directly in your chest.
